Computer technology changes so rapidly. In this way operators must be adaptable and willing to learn. Also there is a need of analytical and technical expertise. Particularly this is for operators who work in automated data centers. It is have to deal with unique or high-level problems that a computer is not programmed to handle. Very important for operators is to communicate well. Also they must work effectively with programmers, users and other operators. Computer operators must be able to work independently.They may have little or no direct supervision.
A few computer operators may advance to supervisory jobs. Most management positions within data processing or computer operations centers require advanced formal education. It is such as a bachelor's or higher degree. Some computer operators may advance to work in areas such as network operations or support. This is through on-the-job experience and additional formal education. In case they gain experience in programming, some operators may advance to work as programmers or analysts. But to get such jobs is becoming much more difficult. This happens in case employers increasingly require candidates for more skilled computer jobs to possess at least a bachelor's degree.
Working Conditions
In general, computer operator works in well-lighted, well-ventilated and comfortable rooms. Many organizations use their computers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Sometimes computer operators may be required to work evening or night shifts and weekends. Usually shift assignments are based on seniority. However, increasingly automated operations will reduce the need for shift work. Many companies can let the computer take over operations during less desirable working hours. Also advances in telecommuting technologies, such as faxes, modems, and e-mail, and data center automation, such as automated tape libraries, let some operators monitor batch processes. Also they let to check systems performance and record problems for the next shift.
Computer operators spend a lot of time in front of a computer monitor. Generally they have some problems with eyestrain, back discomfort, hand and wrist.
