In software development companies programmers may work directly with experts from various fields. Their aim is to create specialized software. Also it can be such programs that designed for specific clients or packaged software for general use. These programs are ranging from games and educational software to programs for desktop publishing and financial planning.
Computer programmers often are grouped into two broad types. They are pplications programmers and systems programmers. Applications programmers write programs to handle a specific job. The aim of such program is to track inventory within an organization. Also they may revise existing packaged software or customize generic applications purchased from vendors. On the contrary, systems programmers write programs to maintain and control computer systems software. It is for operating systems, networked systems and database systems. It makes some changes in the instructions that determine how the network, workstations, and central processing unit of a system handle the various jobs. Also it determines how they communicate with peripheral equipment. It is such as terminals, printers and disk drives.
There are some organizations where such people known as programmer-analysts. They are responsible for both the systems analysis and programming.
Work environment. Most of the time programmers spend in front of their computer terminal. Telecommuting is becoming more common. However, technological advances allow more work to be done from remote locations.
About 40 hours per week is the work-time for the most computer programmers. About four percent work part-time, compared with about 15 percent for all occupations.
