Apart of theses there are also typing, transcription, recordkeeping, accounting and insurance processing. At such courses students learn laboratory techniques, clinical and diagnostic procedures. Also there are such subjects as pharmaceutical principles, the administration of medications and first aid. Moreover they study office practices, patient relations, medical law and ethics. There are accredited programs. Such programs include an internship that provides practical experience in physician's offices, hospitals or other healthcare facilities.
Formal training in medical assisting is not always required. But at the same time it is generally preferred. There is training on the job for some medical assistants. There is a need of high school diploma or the equivalent for applicants. For such applicants there are recommended high school courses. At such courses there are subjects as mathematics, health, biology, typing, bookkeeping, computers and office skills. Also is helpful a volunteer experience in the healthcare field.
There is no license for medical assistants. In this way some states require to take a test or a course before  they can perform certain tasks. For instance test can be such as taking x rays. Most employers prefer to hire experienced workers or certified applicants. Those are such applicants who have passed a national examination, indicating that the medical assistant meets certain standards of competence.
There is expected that employment of medical assistants grow much faster than the average. It happens because of technological advances in medicine, growing and aging population.
Job prospects should be the best for medical assistants. It is for those medical assistants with formal training or experience. Also for those who have a certificate.
