| Why is P- 12 Career Education Important? | Have you ever known that: 
• 5 year olds can talk about the job they want when they grow up?
• 6 - 8 year olds have already begun to narrow down the number of occupations they are prepared to consider in the future?
• students from preschool to Year 12 have the capacity to understand career development?
These study results suggest we are missing a valuable opportunity to influence and enhance the career development of our students if we do not begin career education early.
12 years career education is not about expecting students to make lifelong career decisions at a very young age. It provides them with a context for their school learning and the skills, knowledge and attitudes to make future career decisions.
A wide-ranging career education program can:
• show students the real life relevance of their school experience
• engage students in learning through relevant, interesting and fun activities
• develop meaningful partnerships with parents and the local community
• help students acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes they will need in Year 10 to develop personally meaningful, achievable and worthwhile Senior Education and Training Plans
• prepare students for today's constantly changing world of work.
What do students have to learn from career education?
In the course of a P - 12 career education program students obtain the knowledge, skills and attitudes they will need to make personally relevant and appropriate career decisions in the future.
These skills, knowledge and attitudes required include:
• knowledge and understanding of self e.g. achievements, strengths, weaknesses, interests, values, learning styles
• positive attitudes to change and lifelong learning
• skills to access and apply information about occupations and education/training pathways
• career decision-making, planning and management skills.
