| Graduate Research | Once students have an exact research topic in mind, they first of all should call to the college website. All institution has its own areas of knowledge, with staff knowledge in specialised themes, and many have close links with local business and industry. Students should look at the applicable faculty and the research interests of the staff in order to find somebody there who could supervise their research. Another good idea is to consult the academic journals in their area of interest. Perhaps academics from this university have written on subjects related to their own.
Students should contact someone they think would be of help to them in reaching their decision. If they cannot find any exacting individual on the college website, they may call the department head and ask if they can recommend someone. Then, a candidate should try to organize a meeting with his or her potential supervisor, in order to find out more about their research interests and also to decide whether or not he or she attach on a personal level. A student is going to be spending a lot of time with this person, and he or she will have a measure of control over a student’s academic progress.
Application procedures greatly differ in various colleges and universities to college and from subject to subject. Most institutions include research proposal forms that standardise the submission process. Candidates frequently talk about their proposals with their potential supervisor before submitting it. A typical research proposal is 3 to 4 pages and can include the following elements:
- Title of the student’s future research topic, - What the student hopes to achieve or demonstrate or argue, - The methodology the student plan to employ, - Student’s motivation for the project - Student’s potential supervisor - At least two academic references - Professional references
Candidates may be invited for an interview before being accepted. Generally, they can apply to do, and start, a research postgrad at any time during the year. On the other hand, most possible students apply for September or October entry.
