There is no right reason to choose graduate study as an option, but some reasons are more positive than others:
- A person really enjoys his or her subject. This is a highly motivating reason to achieve a higher degree. It is worth considering the long-term suggestions of a person’s choice though. Does his or her choice of course fit in with his or her long-term career plans? That does not mean that he or she should simply think graduate programs related to his or her area of work interest. All further study programs will enable a person to develop skills that he or she could promote to an employer. Some, however, will be of more use to him or her than others.
- A person needs graduate study to follow his or her definite career. Some careers such as law, teaching, librarianship or clinical psychology need professional qualifications. Others employment areas do not require a graduate qualification. An applicant should think about if graduate study will give a separate advantage to him or her. A student should also research the area of work he or she is interested in to recognize whether a graduate course would be beneficial.
- It will make a person be noticeable in the crowd. This is perhaps the most widespread reason of student’s chooice for graduate study. It is recommended for an applicant to research the area of work he or she wants to enter in order to identify if applicants with postgraduate qualifications are more favourable. In some cases a graduate qualification will improve job prospects. In others, however, appropriate knowledge is more valuable, and so student’s time could be used more efficiently undertaking related unpaid work.
