| Application of Graduates | The Uni-Assist system has been prepared since 2004 in order to help international students looking for undergraduate study and some postgraduate courses at German universities.
Though, for most graduate courses, candidates should directly make contact with the Foreign Students Office of the institution that they want applying to, in order to receive essential application forms, requirements and information. Most graduate courses at German universities are completely subscribed, so each student should apply in as early as possible, especially if he or she looks for funding or applying for scholarships.
Though the EU-instituted European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) makes sure that qualifications of many countries are recognised in Germany, the level at which a student enters is determined by the individual institution that he or she applies to.
For many German graduate courses, a candidate may need to have already been awarded a Masters at their first university. It may be essential for a student to be placed in the final years of a degree course, before being accepted to a Masters programme.
For admission to a PhD programme, the candidate may need an excellent Masters qualification or even be required to enter into a German Masters programme first.
German universities also require a level of specialisation in the chosen subject of each student, which makes varying subjects among undergraduate and graduate level extremely strange.
As Germany is a member of the EU, students of countries that are the members of this organisation do not need a visa to study in Germany. They will, though, need to apply for a residence allow on arrival. To get this permit, they have to show that they have enough resources to support themselves during their stay in Germany.
